A new National Stroke Programme - thanks to you!

In 2018, we were delighted to be invited to work with NHS England and others to develop a new National Stroke Programme, building on the successes of the National Stroke Strategy.

Together, we have ensured the plan covers the issues that are most important for people affected by stroke and we will be working to ensure the National Stroke Programme is implemented on a local level.

We're absolutely delighted with this news and we couldn't have done it without you.

What did we do?

  • Gathered over 55,000 petition signatures.
  • Raised questions in Parliament.
  • Gained media coverage.
  • Developed a statement backed by 19 clinical organisations.

We want to thank each and every single one of you who helped us during the New Era for Stroke campaign; whether it be signing our petition or contacting your local MP.

Why we needed a new National Stroke Programme

Our stroke survey revealed that 45% of stroke survivors feel abandoned when they leave the hospital because they aren't getting the help and support they need.

Nearly half of stroke survivors weren't contacted at all after leaving the hospital and 30% of those surveyed rated the care they received at home as poor or very poor. "I feel I've been left to fend for myself. As well as looking after my partner, I also have our 22 month-old Son to look after. I keep being told that I need to look after myself but I feel that there isn't the support to do it." - Carer for stroke survivor

Support from clinical leaders in stroke

On 14 November 2016 clinical leaders in stroke put out a statement in support of a renewed national focus on stroke which covered the need for new treatments, improved post-acute care and prevention.

This was cosigned by 19 clinical bodies right across the stroke care pathway and demonstrates the need for a new national plan for stroke following the end of the national stroke strategy.
